Parc del Laberint d’Horta
By Santiago Rusiñol
Background
When creating ‘The Crouching Beggar’ back in 1902, Picasso painted over art by one of his earliest influences, Santiago Rusiñol of the Catalan modernisme movement.
Researchers have now concluded that the painting underneath Picasso’s famous piece is a depiction of a hilly landscape in the Jardin Laberint d’Horta in Barcelona.
Method
Using spectroscopic imaging, artificial intelligence, and 3D printing, Oxia Palus actualised the pentimento (the visible trace of an earlier painting) of Picasso’s ‘The Crouching Beggar’ (1902). Using a processed x-ray fluorescence image and a conditional GAN model Oxia Palus reconstructed a lost masterpiece: Rusinol’s ‘Parc del Laberint d’Horta’, the World’s First NeoMaster.
